Name: Bruce Fealk
Location: Rochester Hills, MI

My personal volunteering highlight:

I waged a two-year counter campaign against Congressman Joe Knollenberg, Republican from Michigan's 9th Congressional District. Through a coordinated effort employing letters to the editor, protests and blogging, I believe I played a significant role in his ouster in 2008. The highlight of my campaign was an incident in a local drug store where I confronted the Congressman about his votes on the war in Iraq and against the SCHIP bill. I captured the encounter on video and relayed it to the DCCC and to several other news sources. The video ended up being the subject of a full segment on Countdown with Keith Olberman. Three weeks later, Trent Wisecup, the Congressman's chief of staff was fired. Democrat, Gary Peters, won the election by 10%.

More about my volunteering with DFA:

I am a member of DFA, but not currently volunteering.

More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:

I am active in some local groups, one is Rochester Area for Change, www.rochesterareaforchange.org and have been acting as their webmaster.

I am also active developing a single-payer health care forum with the 9th Congressional District.

I have been an active member of the Michigan Democratic Party and the Oakland County Democratic Party.

More about my work on current campaigns and issues:

I am helping to organize a single-payer health care forum and working to keep our Obama volunteers active through Rochester Area for Change. RAC is involved in community activites.

What motivates me:

My motivations comes from a basic sense of fairness and justice. The American system of government has been abused by the Republican party and especially the right-wing evangelical movement within the party and I want to help make our country what our found fathers intended it to be, a place where everyone has a chance to live out their dreams and where fairness and justice prevail.

How I try to motivate others:

I have a local news services for about 100 people on a personal mailing list. I also organize events and protests around issues that I care about.

I write letters to the editor and often call on my friends to take actions such as calling their representative or writing letters.

I was named Progressive Activist of the Year by a statewide blog, Blogging for Michigan in 2008.

Where I see myself in five years:

I am considering running for office myself.

My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:

Health Care Isn't Optional, It Should be Standard for All Americans

I read these blogs often:
Buzzflash
Democratic Underground

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

I believe that it is important to make as many people aware of stories that the corporate media is not paying enough or possibly any attention to and posting on blogs can bring those stories to light.

Corporate media is now paying a great deal of attention to so-called new media and coverage of a story in a blog often leads to coverage in corporate media resources.

Blogs allow average citizens to become the media and that has been the aim of my online activities.

A Little Bit About Bruce Fealk

On May 28, George W. Bush visited Benton Harbor, Michigan and I arranged a protest and we got some nice media coverage. I appear at the :55 mark. The video is also on Democratic Underground, RawStory and DailyKos. I am a progressive activist from Rochester Hills, Michigan. I am a contributor to statewide blogs and also a blogger for a local newspaper, The Oakland Press. During the 2008 election cycle my activism took the form of starting my own community television show, Michigan Progress, and I am responsible for bringing to light the record of our then Republican Congressman, Joe Knollenberg, who was defeated by Gary Peters in 2008. My activism is part of the reason we have a Democratic representative. One of my acts of activism ended up on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and with the Congressman's chief of staff being fired. I created a web site: Click here to visit Retire Joe Knollenberg And a blog dedicated to all things Joe Knollenberg. Click here to visit Vote No on Joe

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

I believe I should earn a DFA scholarship because of the level and success of my activism in helping to expose our Republican Congressman and the success of my campaign. Also, I am not currently employed and I also believe my activism can be an example to the effect one person can have.
