Name: Theresa
Location: Crown Point, IN

My personal volunteering highlight:

I am a 54 year old white, Irish Catholic, woman raised in SE Pennsylvania. Until 2008, I was never interested in, or concerned about politics. I was the typical, "what difference does my vote make?" pathetic non-activist. In fact, I never voted in my life until the Obama Indiana primary.
My then 21 year old Political Science major daughter had been telling me for several years to pay attention to this newcomer called "Barack Obama". In order to have something to talk to her about, (she only spoke politics) I started watching the Iowa primaries. By Obama's concession speech in NH, I had decided to do whatever I could do to get him elected.
The rest of it, as they say, is history.

I voted for the first time in my life in the Indiana Primaries after working every day, all day in our local campaign office. I continued through the general election every day, helping to open 2 offices and being office manager of the latter.
I will be involved in making change for the rest of my life from what I have learned so far. I also became involved in our local democratic party which was also located in our office.

Is this a typical Obama story or what? All because I wanted to have something my daughter and I could share. (She also worked activly for Obama at college!)

We are now a political family. My 57 year old husband got involved and my then 15 year old son (as well as many of his friends).

More about my volunteering with DFA:

Please tell me more about being involved.

More about my work on current campaigns and issues:

I am trying to start a volunteer group to be active with our children in schools. Having volunteers to listen to children read or practice math facts, or tell stories about things they have experienced is invaluable in our schools.

What motivates me:

The need for my children to have a better life than I have.

How I try to motivate others:

Tell my Story!!!!!

Where I see myself in five years:

Five years from now, I would like to be volunteering/running the campaign, to get a local young man (Brandon Flannigan) elected into our local democratic party. We have discussed his future and I feel we will all be better to have him in office.

My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:

A person without Healthcare is a person without a future

Blogging

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

I am a phone and email person as I prefer the personal touch when working with people. Keeping current on activities, laws, proposed legislation, truths and falsehoods, etc. are all a neccessary part of the process. Blogs, community sites, democratic sites, emails and other electronic communication are all sources for each of us to use to be the best informed of all aspects of our nation as a whole.

A Little Bit About Theresa

I am a 54 year old mother of three young adults (16, 23 and 25) who had never participated in politics prior to 2008. I volunteered for the Obama primary and general campaign and worked every day, all day, before the elections. I am concerned for my children’s future and the future of their entire generation. In helping to open two Obama offices, I learned a great deal about community organizing and also worked closely with our local democratic party. I have learned first hand, the power of reaching out to people and to having people come together to discuss issues in order to effect change. I would like to continue to engage others in constructive dialogue and have proper skills to make a difference and to empower others to make a difference. I plan to be active in the community and help in the 2010 and 2012 elections as well.

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

I want to continue be involved and help make continued change happen. I hope to learn new ideas, techniques, strategies and tools which will enable me to be more effective for the upcoming campaigns. As an educator, I would like to develop the skill set which allows me to effectively train others to enhance their organizing skills. I would like to continue to engage others in constructive dialogue and have proper skills to make a difference and to empower others to make a difference.

I am currently unable to financially attend Networks Nation without the scholarship support.
