My personal volunteering highlight:

Being from a small island my actions have never had much of a chance to effect large groups of people. I have instead tried hard to defend the progressive stance on many issues. These efforts eventually lead me to to join the Young Democrats of Hawaii and help to restart it on my island. Now I try to work with the youth of Hawaii to meet with candidates and give our stance on issues to ensure that the next generation can have a voice in the world today.

What motivates me:

The previous generations have given inadequate attention to some of the major problems our country and planet face today and those we will face tomorrow. My generation and future generations are expected to clean up a world of messes and with time running short we will not be able to pass it on to some distant future generation. Just like our predecessors we have the option to ignore the problems; but we are not granted the luxury of escaping the consequences. With this in mind I can't even imagine not being active.

How I try to motivate others:

I look at each person as an individual and I encourage them to tell me what is important to them. I ask them to think about what they want for the world and what the world will look like if their wish becomes reality. I find people that once people can visualize what they want for the world that they will work very hard to make it a reality.

Blogging

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

Blogging is very important to our new digital age. With Governments, big businesses, and other powerful entities having larger control over other media the blog has become one of the most powerful tools for the individual. A blog gives someone a chance to announce their beliefs just as loud as any organization. The power of blogging likely has never been so strong as recently with the events following the election in Iran. Communication is vital to a democracy, and I foresee that in time blogs will become just as big a part to public opinion and elections as the television media has been since its invention.

I was born in Hawaii in 1991 to a political activist Mom from Washington, D.C. and a playwright Dad from Melbourne, Australia. I grew up in both Hawaii & Australia, plus some long term visits to Indonesia where I attended a bi-lingual, multi-national school. Not surprisingly, I developed a strong interest in politics and world affairs. My interests combined with my computer tech skills to develop a network of contacts and friends around the world. Additionally, I have just completed an internship with a very progressive Congressman in his Washington D.C. office.

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

The internet has created the opportunity for individuals around the world to unite with common interests and goals, unfiltered by government spin and mainstream news media. My political activism career is just beginning, and a Netroot's scholarship will give me an extraordinary boost in my ability to promote progressive democratic ideals. It will also bring me in contact with like-minded individuals and new ideas in ways not otherwise available to me in my remote island home. And frankly, it's difficult at 18 to afford the travel and Netroot's costs, so I need the scholarship in order to attend. Please help out a young progressive by voting for me!
