Democracy for America, Gov. Howard Dean Launch "America Can't Wait" Campaign

Released: Sep 17, 2009 3:42 PM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Campaign calls on Congress to pass reform including a public option using majority votes.

Burlington, VT—Democracy for America and its founder, Gov. Howard Dean, launched a new campaign today calling on Congress to pass real reform with majority votes.

The campaign, called America Can't Wait, focuses on the strong Congressional and grassroots support that exists for a public option.

"At least 218 House and 51 Senate Democrats have said they would vote for the final healthcare bill if it included the choice of a public option rather than vote against the bill and kill reform," said Dean, a lead advocate for a public option. "That’s means Congress has the majority votes needed to pass a public option today."

Members of the House and Senate who have said they will vote “yes” can be found at www.americacantwait.com.

A robust healthcare reform plan, including the choice of a public option, can be passed in a budget bill by a majority vote in the U.S. Senate, instead of the 60 vote-minimum that some think is necessary. Numerous budget scholars and experts on Senate procedure agree, says Dean.

Stan Collender, a contributing editor at the National Journal, contributing writer for Roll Call, and author of “The Guide to the Federal Budget,” is an expert and frequent speaker on the budget. “Reconciliation has become such a standard part of the budget process that using it for health care would be neither surprising nor precedent-setting," he said in a Roll Call column.

The Senate has passed numerous major reforms, including the Bush tax cuts and funding for the Iraq War, using reconciliation—more than 25 times in history.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean underscores the grassroots support for a public option.

“The majority of Americans want healthcare reform with the choice of a public option that keeps insurance companies honest, lowers costs and increases service,” Jim Dean said. “Our members are joining with President Obama in calling on Congress to get the job done."

Last week, CBS News released a poll that showed support for a public option has increased since the President’s speech to Congress. And in a CNN national poll, two out of three Americans who watched Obama's health care reform speech now favor his health care plans, a 14-point gain.

"Now is the season for action. The majority of Americans want it, and majority votes in Congress will pass it," said Gov. Dean.

By Joe Frandino

BURLINGTON, VT — Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action community, endorsed Norman Siegel for New York State Public Advocate. He is the only DFA-endorsed candidate in this race.

As executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, Siegel has been at the frontline of some of New York City’s most critical civil liberties struggles. He also served for eight years in a private civil liberties practice.

"Norman Siegel is a lifelong New Yorker who understands the unique needs of the city and its people," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. "As Public Advocate, he will continue to fight for healthcare as a human right, work towards a greener New York, advocate for same-sex marriage and support reform in New York City schools."

Siegel helped demand an independent Civilian Complaint Review Board, fought for the NYS Equal Rights Amendment, successfully defended the Brooklyn Museum's right to exhibit controversial art, defended West Harlem and Brooklyn residents and businesses against abuses of eminent domain, and sued to obtain same-sex marriage licenses for the "Nyack 10.”

"His long and esteemed career is built on standing up for the rights of all citizens," said Dean. "It is because of his continued defense of our constitutional rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, that we endorse Norman Siegel for NYS Public Advocate."

Thousands 'Stand with Dr. Dean' in Washington, DC for Massive Health Care Reform Day of Action

Released: Jun 25, 2009 2:08 PM

Democracy for America Founder Gov. Howard Dean presents over 400,000 signatures from Americans demanding a public health insurance option

WASHINGTON, DC—Gov. Howard Dean presented 400,000 signatures in support of a public health insurance option at a massive health care rally on Capitol Hill today, a demonstration of recent polling saying a public option is overwhelmingly supported by a majority of Americans. The signatures were gathered as part of Democracy for America’s Stand with Dr. Dean campaign, a massive grassroots effort to ensure that health care reform includes a public health insurance option available to everyone in America.

Throughout the week leading up to today's rally at the Upper Senate Park, DFA members delivered petition signatures locally to the district offices of their Senators and Congressional Representatives.

In numerous polls, a public health insurance option has bi-partisan support among voters. The NBC/New York Times poll indicates over 76% of Americans favor having the choice of a government health insurance plan. With some polls showing over 80% support and others reporting even over 50% of Republicans in support, it is clear that America wants health care reform that provides choice, not more of the same broken system.

Gov. Dean, a doctor and former Vermont governor, is lead advocate for a public health insurance option, saying, “Over 75% of Americans, including 50% of Republicans, support a public health insurance option. They understand that to have real health care reform, we must have a public option that gives every American a choice in their health care. Failure to pass a plan with a public option is not real reform. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are making their voices heard on this issue. If Congress fails to listen, the American people will hold them accountable."

Since its launch in March, the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign has mobilized DFA's one million members in a multi-faceted campaign that includes online organizing and on-the-ground mobilization. In addition to the petition, members wrote 34,000 Letters to the Editors of local papers nationwide, attended health care town halls across the country, and made tens of thousands of calls and sent tens of thousands of emails to Congress in support of a public option.

"We’ve waited too long and come too far for Congress to take a half-step when a big step is needed," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. "That's why it's so key for the grassroots to remain involved in the fight for real reform. It’s up to each of us to do our part to make history and win health care for all."

The health care rally—called Health Care 09. We Can’t Wait—was coordinated by Health Care for America Now (HCAN) and included involvement from hundreds of other progressive organizations, in addition to DFA

Professional polls indicate Americans overwhelmingly support the public option

Released: Jun 22, 2009 1:50 PM

By Joe Frandino

According to polls conducted by the New York Times,Wall Street Journal, NBC, Kaiser Family Foundation, and Consumers Union, the majority of Americans desire a public health insurance option.  The polls have been conducted across the country, taking into account nearly all party identifications, geographical areas, income levels, and political involvement.

Within the surveys, an average 70% of Americans show their support for the public option.  The New York Times and Wall Street Journal polls indicate numbers as high as 76% approval of the public option.

The grassroots movement is clearly working, gathering support from across the country and across the aisle; a New York Times poll even indicates that now 50% of Republicans polled indicate their preference for a public health insurance option.

It is clear that public pressure is working, but we need to keep up our efforts and make sure our members of Congress support the people and the president by passing a bill with the public option.

Keep getting the word out about the public option and pressuring your members of Congress to support the will of the people.

BURLINGTON, VT – Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action community, endorsed Josh Skaller in the New York City Council District 39 race.

Gov. Howard Dean, founder of DFA, appeared with Skaller at a morning press conference at the campaign office of the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats. They later greeted subway riders at the F train’s 7th Avenuestop.

"I'm proud to endorse Josh Skaller for the New York City Council," said Gov. Dean. "He's the kind of strong progressive leader we need standing up for our values at the local level. I admire Josh's commitment to meeting voters in Brooklyn one at a time. Skaller, the only DFA-endorsed candidate in the race for District 39, is a long-time grassroots activist and has served as a director of the local volunteer DFA group, Democracy for New York City, for the last four years.

"On the New York City Council, Josh Skaller will work with fellow reform-minded leaders to affect real, lasting changes in the way the city conducts its business and relates to its citizens," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA. "At a time when billionaire Mayor Bloomberg dominates city politics, Josh will use his position to empower like-minded local community groups and organizers and give them a strong voice at City Hall."

RX for Reform Online Chat with Gov. Howard Dean

Released: Jun 10, 2009 10:14 AM

By Joe Frandino

Last night, Gov. Howard Dean held a national live online chat with  grassroots activists from across the country. Those who logged into the  Stand with Dr. Dean website ("http://www.standwithdrdean.com") were able to submit their questions electronically to Gov. Dean.

The online chat was a big success, with more than 2,500 questions being submitted and more than 2,000 people taking part in the chat.

To list a few of the excellent questions posed to Gov. Dean last night:

Does the public health care solution cover those who cannot pay at all?

DEAN: Yes, premiums would be income based.

The money and lobbying staff of drug and insurance companies are huge. What makes you think we can effectively counter that?

DEAN: Real change always comes from the grassroots, but its hard work and that's why you are so important. You can write letters to the editor, contact members of Congress, sign the petition at standwithdrdean.com and make it clear that you want real change in healthcare or that you'll work very hard for change in Congress.

What [are you] doing to spread the need for a public healthcare alternative to the non-believers?

DEAN:
I've been spending a lot of time on the road doing town hall meetings to make sure people know what's at stake and have been explaining this on television, radio and in print. I also wrote a book, Howard Dean's Prescription for Real Healthcare Reform.

What would be the incentive for people to move from employer-based healthcare to this new program?

DEAN: It's cheaper, comprehensive, and it travels with the individual wherever they live, no matter who they are employed by, and even if they are unemployed.

Do you think private insurance companies would really be able to compete with the public option?

DEAN: They will be if they behave themselves. As I point out in my book, they will have to treat their clients better and treat providers better. They will have to focus more on patient care and less on profits.

Gov. Howard Dean Launches Health Care Reform Campaign

Released: Mar 26, 2009 9:00 AM

Released: Thursday, March 26, 2009 BURLINGTON, VT – Howard Dean launched a new campaign yesterday evening on a Democracy for America conference call with thousands of supporters across the country. The former chair of the DNC called on Congress to pass healthcare reform which includes a universally available public option, such as Medicare.

"Healthcare reform legislation rises and falls on whether the American public is allowed to choose a universally available public option, like Medicare, or not." Governor Dean explained to his supporters. "If we are allowed to choose a public option like Medicare, the bill will be real healthcare reform. If we're not, we could be back fighting about it for another 20 years before anybody tries again."

Dr. Dean's announcement comes at time when insurance companies and HMO's have vowed to fight President Obama on his campaign promise to include a publicly available option in the healthcare reform he wants passed by Congress this year.

"The battle against real healthcare reform already begun. Our Stand With Dr. Dean campaign will ensure that policy makers in DC hear from every American, not just big money who will stop at nothing to retain the status quo." said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy For America.

As a first step in the campaign, Dr. Dean asked supporters to add their name to a petition statement at www.StandwithDrDean.com. The campaign will be run by Governor Dean and Democracy For America. This is the beginning of a multi-pronged campaign which will generate broad based support for a public option through neighborhood canvasses, meetings with legislators, running ads in targeted districts, and more. Dr. Dean asked supporters to gather 10,000 signatures by Friday and the organization expects to deliver over 250,000 signatures to members of Congress in the weeks to come.

The text of the petition reads:

Give America a choice. We support healthcare reform that allows individual Americans to choose either a universally available public healthcare option like Medicare or for-profit private insurance. A public option is the only way to guarantee healthcare for all Americans and its inclusion is non- negotiable.

Any legislation without the choice of a public option is only insurance reform and not the healthcare reform America needs.

Democracy for America is a one million-member grassroots organization which organizes activists in local communities, trains campaign staff, and endorses progressive candidates up and down the ballot. Governor Dean's return to DFA coincides with its fifth anniversary. Governor Dean plans to focus the organizations efforts on health care for the coming year.

DFA Endorses Frank Lautenberg for US Senate

Released: Oct 22, 2008 12:22 PM

Released:  Friday, October 17, 2008

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action organization, endorsed Frank Lautenberg’s campaign for the United States Senate during the primaries because of his record of leadership and his commitment to progressive values.  With a global financial crisis, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and working men and women struggling to get by, DFA knows we need Sen. Lautenberg now more than ever.

Frank Lautenberg is a progressive fighter with the experience, wisdom, and judgment we have to have in the United States Senate,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Sen. Lautenberg is the leader we need as America moves forward to confront the major challenges here at home and overseas.

Frank Lautenberg was born in Paterson, N.J., the son of immigrants who came through Ellis Island.  Along with two childhood friends, Sen. Lautenberg started ADP – one of the first and largest computing service companies in the world.  After serving as CEO for ADP for many years, Sen. Lautenberg was elected to the U.S. Senate.

In this term alone, Frank Lautenberg has voted repeatedly to bring our troops home from Iraq, stood up to the Bush administration to stop drilling for oil less than 100 miles from New Jersey’s shoreline, and stopped George Bush from cutting affordable health care for thousands of working class New Jersey families and children.

Democracy for America and I are both committed to changing direction in Washington after the failures of eight years of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.  Together we will work to end the War in Iraq, boost our economy, protect the environment, and make health care and higher education more affordable and accessible,” said Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg.

Democracy for America is the key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Jerry McNerney in California’s 11th Congressional District.

Frank Lautenberg is a true progressive who has always fought for working men and women in the Garden State and across the country,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  “Unlike his opponent, Sen. Lautenberg takes his marching orders from the only people who count: his constituents.

Released:  Monday, October 20, 2008

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Linda Ketner’s campaign to represent South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.  Linda is running against out-of-touch Republican incumbent Henry Brown.

"Linda Ketner is a forward thinker with a well-earned reputation for getting the job done," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Linda Ketner will get down to brass tacks and make sure the economy works for South Carolinians and all Americans."

Linda Ketner is a proven leader and successful businessperson with an independent voice who has worked across party lines on the citizen side of politics for decades in South Carolina.  Linda has worked as a management consultant for many Fortune 500 companies as well as government and nonprofit organizations.  As a community leader, she has founded organizations for change and been recognized for her service with many community awards.  Linda is running for Congress to help repair our damaged economy and to make government work again for the people of South Carolina.

Democracy for America is a key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Donna Edwards in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District.

I really appreciate the support the Democracy for America endorsement represents,” said Linda Ketner.  “Democracy for America empowers citizens to play an active role in their communities and that is what my campaign is all about.

"Linda Ketner will be a powerful voice for her constituents.  Her opponent is not a leader, but a pathetic follower of the failed philosophies of George Bush and John McCain," said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of DFA.  "Henry Brown is part of the problem of a bloated government that does not know how to live within its means.  Linda Ketner is a businesswoman, a community activist, and a leader who will bring the change that the Palmetto state needs and deserves."

Risch Not Popular with Newspapers, Fellow Republicans

Released: Oct 1, 2008 3:13 PM

Released:  Tuesday, September 30, 2008

BURLINGTON, VT -- During Jim Risch’s 37 years as a politician, he has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.  Some have been bold enough to say so out loud, despite Risch’s power and reputation for abusing it.

Following Risch’s victory in the primary race for Lieutenant Governor in 2002, sitting Lieutenant Governor Jack Riggs called Risch a “career politician” and told Boise TV station KTVB that he questioned Risch’s honesty.  He also noted that Risch had been beaten in his home county.  “He did not win Ada County, where people know him,” Riggs said.  “I think that’s a good perception.

Fellow candidate Larry Eastland agreed with Riggs, and had his own explanation for why Risch won.  “It wasn’t just the dollars.  It was a combination of the dollars and deceptive advertising the dollar bought.  It’s deceptive  for a downtown Boise trial lawyer who spent 30 years earning his money as a trial lawyer, who has a ranch as a tax write-off, to spend huge amounts of money calling himself a rancher,” Eastland said.

The state’s largest newspaper has also found itself on the wrong side of Risch.  Calling him a “shoot from the hip type” and “a hard-edged lawmaker who inspires fear,” the Idaho Statesman concluded that Risch “made his reputation as an iron-fisted leader in the (state) Senate.

During the primary in 2002, the Statesman’s editorial page said of Risch, “He claims to have ‘mellowed,’ but has never erased his image as an autocratic bully.  And his willingness to do anything in the name of politics . . . leaves us worried.

In the current campaign, several newspapers have taken Risch to task for being less than honest is describing the tax shift he authored as acting Governor.  “The tax overhaul . . . is doing no favors for working-class Idahoans,” the Statesman wrote.  “For Risch to air television ads saying he delivered ‘the largest tax cut in state history’ is an act of political cynicism.”  The paper concluded that “This says a lot . . . about the way the lieutenant governor might approach tax and economic decisions facing Idaho’s next U.S. Senator.

In a piece titled “Robin Hood in Reverse,” the Idaho Falls Post Register said Risch was “distorting” his tax shift.  “The big winners were businesses, which got a $60 million tax break.  The losers were individuals, who ended up paying $10 million more.”  Noting Risch’s ads touting his “tax cut,” the paper concluded, “and you wonder why people get cynical about politics.

Private economists have also taken Risch to task for his deception.  Former Idaho Chief Economist Richard Slaughter wrote in the Idaho Statesman that what Risch did was a tax shift, not a tax cut, and that ordinary Idahoans paid more in increased sales tax than they saved in property tax.

The result of shifting from property tax to sales tax is that wage earners now pay twice the tax on groceries and other necessities as before, while businesses and organizations favored by Risch are totally exempt.”  He concluded, “You remember the old saying, ‘figures don’t lie, but . . ."

BURLINGTON, VTDemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Jim Himes’ campaign to represent Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District.  Jim is running against the increasingly tone-deaf and out-of-touch Republican incumbent and War in Iraq cheerleader Chris Shays.  Rep. Shays is the last remaining Republican representative in New England

"Jim Himes represents the future. He offers a tremendous opportunity for us to finally get something done about the critical issues facing us in the 4th District, transportation, affordable housing, and education," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA and resident of Fairfield, CT.  "More importantly Jim Himes has lived with these problems just like the rest of us, and understands the kind of leadership it will take to solve them."

Jim Himes was raised by a single mother in a small town in New Jersey, where he attended public schools and was admitted to Harvard College.  There, Jim's academic and athletic accomplishments earned him a Rhodes Scholarship.  After completing his studies at Oxford, Jim took an entry-level position at Goldman Sachs, where he worked his way up to Vice President over the course of a 12 year career.  Fluent in Spanish from his first 10 years of childhood in Latin America, Jim specialized in Latin American and communications technology banking.

In 2002, Jim left Wall Street to pursue business-oriented solutions to the problems of urban poverty.  He is currently on leave from his role of Vice President and Director of Northeast operations at Enterprise Community Partners, a non-profit organization which helps build affordable housing for low-income Americans by providing financing and expertise to community and housing developers.  Under Jim's leadership, Enterprise developed an innovative program to provide tax preparation assistance and financial services to low-income families.  Jim also helped Enterprise incorporate green technology into their affordable housing projects.

Jim has served as an Elder in his church, an elected finance board member, and as a board member of numerous community organizations.  Jim and his wife Mary live in Cos Cob, CT with their two daughters, Emma (9) and Linley (6).

“Democracy for America is leading the charge to take our country back,” said Jim Himes.   “In races all across the country, from the top of the ballot to the bottom, Democracy for America has made a real difference by engaging the grassroots to further progressive values. I am honored to have their support.”

"Like a majority of voters in the 4th District, Jim Himes is an opponent of the failed War in Iraq.  Chris Shays, on the other hand, has stood with George Bush and John McCain to insure the continuation of our involvement in this war of choice," said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of DFA.  "Chris Shays is a part of the culture of incumbency that’s brought us the financial mess on Wall Street, the outsourcing of good-paying jobs, and sky high prices for health care.  Jim Himes will put an end to these disastrous policies and offer constituents something they haven’t had for a longtime: a knowledgeable, experienced, and effective representative."

Democracy for America Endorses Alan Grayson for United States Congress

Released: Sep 26, 2008 1:52 PM

Released:  Wednesday, September 24, 2008

BURLINGTON, VTDemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Alan Grayson's campaign to represent Florida’s 8th Congressional District.

"Alan Grayson doesn’t back down, he takes on the tough fights and wins," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Democracy for
America is proud to endorse his campaign because Alan Grayson will be a progressive champion for his constituents."

Alan Grayson is a Harvard-educated attorney who has built a powerful reputation as a staunch opponent of government waste and fraud.  As the founder and manager of his own law firm, Alan Grayson has conducted what the Wall Street Journal called a “one-man war against contractor fraud in
Iraq.”  Alan has been the plaintiffs’ attorney in every False Claims Act case being actively litigated concerning contractor fraud in Iraq.

Through the years, Alan Grayson has shown time and again he has the tenacity and skills to get the job done.  From a housing project in the
Bronx to Harvard to working as a judge’s assistant in the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals to founding a Fortune 1000 company, IDT Corp., to running a successful law practice, Alan is a hard worker with a record of accomplishment that cannot be matched.

I am honored to have the endorsement of Democracy for
America because I share DFA’s mission of citizen empowerment and grassroots organizing,” said Alan Grayson. “This puts us one step closer to winning the election and making real change in America.”

"Alan Grayson will deliver for his constituents on health care and returning good paying jobs to the District.  His Republican opponent can’t say the same thing because his opponent has no plan," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  "Alan Grayson knows the War in
Iraq has been a drain on our resources and the reckless policies of George Bush and John McCain have unnecessarily tarnished the United States’ standing in the world.  Alan will work to end this war and bring our brave men and women in uniform home."

Democracy for America Endorses Larry LaRocco for United States Senate

Released: Sep 26, 2008 1:38 PM

Released:  Monday, September 22, 2008

BURLINGTON, VTDemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Larry LaRocco’s campaign to represent Idaho in the United States Senate.  At the heart of this innovative campaign, Larry has taken over thirty-five jobs across Idaho, from Bonners Ferry to Rexburg, to stay in touch with middle-class, working families.  His jobs have ranged from mechanical work to ranching, banking, and even working as a nurse’s assistant at a nursing home.

Larry LaRocco is really working for the Senate.  Unlike politicians who pay lip service to the idea of respecting working folks, Larry is rolling up his sleeves and getting involved,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA. “Democracy for America is proud to endorse Larry LaRocco because he is showing in every facet of his campaign he’s in this for the people of Idaho.”

Larry LaRocco has been serving the people of Idaho and the United States for years.  In both the public and private sector, Larry has shown he has the skills and judgment to lead and offer common-sense solutions to the problems confronting working men and women.  Larry served in the Army reaching the rank of Captain before returning to Idaho to work for the late Senator Frank Church.  Larry worked as Senator Church’s North Idaho Field Representative; traveling the state and learning first hand about the needs of Idahoans.

Though Larry's heart is with the working people of Idaho, he's no stranger to Washington.  He served two terms in the U.S. House in the 90's, where he earned a reputation for hard work, bi-partisanship and honest brokering.

Military officer, Congressman, businessman, husband, father and grandfather – that just about sums up Larry LaRocco.  Larry and his wife Chris have been married forty years; they have two children and one grandchild.

Democracy for
America is a key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Donna Edwards in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District.

"I’m deeply honored to be endorsed by Democracy for
America.  DFA’s support will help bring change to the U.S. Congress and help get our country back on track. Here in Idaho, working families have been forgotten for far too long," said Larry LaRocco.

Larry LaRocco is what we need in the Senate: a committed progressive who understands how Washington works and will deliver for his constituents,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  “Larry LaRocco has a resume that can’t be matched, but by working jobs across
Idaho, he is showing what it really means to be a representative of the people.”

Jason Lewis won’t just talk about education and health care reform; he’ll get it done.  He’ll be a fighter for working families to make sure educational opportunities and access to quality health care is there for everyone,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  “Jason Lewis knows there is an important role for state government to play in supporting local communities and he has the wisdom and vision to make it happen.”

Democracy for America Endorses Martin Heinrich for United States Congress

Released: Sep 26, 2008 1:12 PM

Released:  Monday, September 22, 2008

BURLINGTON, VTDemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Martin Heinrich's campaign to represent New Mexico's 1st Congressional District.

"Martin Heinrich has been fighting for working men and women his whole life and he's ready to take his progressive message of hard work and opportunity to Washington," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Whether it was as an engineer, president of the Albuquerque City Council, or working with Rep. Tom Udall to preserve New Mexico's natural treasures, Martin Heinrich has the skills, judgment, and experience to get the results that make a difference in people's lives."

Martin Heinrich grew up in a middle class family that worked hard to make sure their children had the opportunity to succeed. His parents taught him to work hard, play by the rules, and to always lend a helping hand.  As the executive director of an educational foundation, Martin was dedicated to providing young people with natural science and environmental education experiences through wilderness expeditions.  As Executive Director of the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation, Martin Heinrich tripled the enrollment, acquired more land for the Foundation, and set up a permanent endowment for funding.

Martin Heinrich served as President of Albuquerque City Council; his tenure as president has been called one of the most productive periods in Council history.  While on the City Council, Martin balanced the city budget every year and led the two year struggle to raise
Albuquerque's minimum wage, after bringing together both business and labor leaders together to find common ground. Because of this, Albuquerque is one of four cities in the entire nation with a minimum wage above the state or federal level.

Democracy for
America is a key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Jerry McNerney in California's 11th Congressional District.

"Democracy in our nation is based on the voices of every American, standing up and taking part in the political process. I'm honored to have the endorsement of Democracy for America, not only because of what it stands for, but also for the people it represents," said Martin Heinrich. "This is a grassroots, boots-on-the-ground organization that gets Americans involved because like me they know that our nation has to start heading in the right direction, and we are the ones who have to make it happen."

"Hardworking New Mexicans have been left behind by seven years of misguided and misdirected Republican polices, that is why Martin Heinrich supports a permanent middle class tax cut and a return to a fiscally responsible balanced budget," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  "New Mexicans need a leader like Martin Heinrich to stand up for their concerns and values.  He will fight for a comprehensive energy policy that breaks our dependence on foreign oil while working to bring our brave men and women home from the War in Iraq."

Democracy for America Endorses Debbie Cook for United States Congress

Released: Sep 17, 2008 12:30 PM

Released: September 9, 2008

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook’s campaign to represent California’s 46th Congressional District.  Debbie is running against the disastrous incumbent Republican Dana Rohrabacher.

Debbie Cook has been a grassroots champion for over 20 years and has a proven record of success in the private sector and as a public servant,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Debbie Cook is running because she’s a committed advocate and activist who fights for her constituents and delivers results.”

Throughout her childhood, Debbie Cook was surrounded by examples of service to community and country.  Debbie was born in 1954 in Corpus Christi, Texas, during her father’s final months of service in the U.S. Navy.  Debbie’s family moved to California in 1966 and she attended Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach.  After graduating from Long Beach State with a degree in Earth Science, Debbie Cook became a PTA mother, a community volunteer, a youth sports coach, all while running her own business.

At 37 Debbie went back to school to obtain her Law degree.  Then she joined the Bolsa Chica Land Trust legal team, winning a case that protects sensitive coastal habitat throughout California to this day.

Elected to the Huntington Beach City Council, she uncovered public corruption, led the fight for balanced city budgets, and worked to save tax dollars by auditing the city’s energy use.  As mayor she led the fight to stop the Orange County Sanitation District from dumping partially treated into the ocean, resulting in cleaner water for our beach’s recreational users.

She is a nationally recognized leader on energy issues and speaks across the country on bringing people together to build a new economy based on renewable energy.

Democracy for America is a key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Rep. Jerry McNerney in California’s 11th Congressional District to Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Donna Edwards in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District.

"I'm proud to be endorsed by Democracy for America.  I am no stranger to grassroots organizing as I led a grassroots movement in my city to protect our parks and beaches,” said Mayor Cook.  “Jim Dean and DFA have made a priority of spreading grassroots organizing throughout the country.  Thanks to their efforts, Orange County has one of the strongest DFA coalition groups anywhere, and their volunteer efforts will help put us over the top in November."

Debbie Cook’s opponent has been a total failure for the District.  Dana Rohrabacher has had his chance to protect American jobs from outsourcing and he has failed,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of DFA.  “Dana Rohrabacher has had a chance to honor the sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform and he has failed.  Debbie Cook is the only candidate in this race with the experience and judgment we need.  She will stand up for working families, children, veterans, seniors and win

Democracy for America Endorses Bill Hedrick for United States Congress

Released: Sep 17, 2008 12:29 PM

Released: September 9, 2008

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Bill Hedrick’s campaign to represent California’s 44th Congressional District.  Bill is running against out-of-touch incumbent Republican Ken Calvert.

Bill Hedrick is an educator, elected official, and community leader with a record of commonsense problem-solving that can’t be matched,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Democracy for America is proud to endorse Bill Hedrick’s campaign because of his experience, his wisdom, and his commitment to progressive values.”

Bill Hedrick was born in Los Angeles in 1952.  The son of a Teamster and a teacher, both from the South, he absorbed the lessons of hard work, common sense, and tolerance modeled by his parents.

A product of public schools, Bill received his BA in Social Science and MA in Education from California State University, Los Angeles. He began teaching elementary school in Hollywood in 1974, and has spent 34 years in education in Southern California, the last eight years serving as president of the Rialto Education Association, an NEA/AFL-CIO affiliate.

In November 1988, Bill was elected to the Board of Education of the 51,000 student Corona-Norco Unified School District.  He has served four terms as president of the Board, representing 250,000 residents of the 44th district, and deals with an annual budget in excess of $400,000,000.

Bill and his wife of 28 years, Beth, have lived in Corona since 1981, and have five children.  Their son Adam, a soldier with the 3rd ID, is currently serving a second Iraqi deployment east of Baghdad. Son Jesse served in Baquba with the 1st ID before suffering a near-fatal "heat event," while his wife, Evelyn, was an army convoy driver in Baghdad, also serving a second tour. Sarah is an apprentice electrician, and Zach and Rebekkah are students.

"I am honored to have the endorsement of Democracy for America,” said Bill Hedrick.  “The support of activists committed to real change at the grassroots level will make it possible for us to convey our message of honest, responsible, and effective government--for a change--in the 44th District."

When Bill Hedrick talks about bringing our brave men and women in uniform home from the War in Iraq, his opponent is silent.  When Bill Hedrick talks about clean, renewable energy sources, Ken Calvert is too busy taking money from big oil.  And, when Bill Hedrick talks about protecting American jobs and restoring the middle class, Ken Calvert says nothing because he has no economic plan,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  “Now is the time for Ken Calvert’s shameful and self-serving Congressional career to come to an end.”

John McClelland knows we need to fully fund our public schools to ensure our children are ready to contribute to and compete in the 21st Century economy.  John McClelland is a forward thinker bringing to the table solutions like implementing a truly modern mass transit system for North Texas and across the state,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  “John McClelland won’t wait to solve the health care crisis that is wreaking havoc on the lives of working men and women.  He will work to bring affordable health care to all Texans.”
